How XYZ spent 2020

News from XYZ Type

A dumpster fire with sprinkles

Has it been a year or a decade? All we know is that 2020 was hard for everyone, and time became amorphous. Through it all, your support of our foundry has been a bright spot—topped off by Kara Gordon’s heartwarming review of Aglet Sans, which appeared on Typographica just this morning. We are feeling the feels!

Although it wasn’t the year we had planned, we did manage to get a few things done...

We released new typefaces

Aglet Mono took its place alongside its Slab and Sans siblings, and our in-progress typefaces Ballast and Cedar made their debuts on Future Fonts, where we will post updated versions as we continue development.

We made custom fonts & lettering

We’re currently collaborating with Polymode (who recently made great use of our forthcoming Ballast Sans) to develop their new house typeface with an unexpected variable axis, teased below. We’re eager to take on more custom projects, from customized versions of our existing typefaces to full-on custom typefaces and logotypes.

We worked with awesome people

A highlight of 2020 was finding new reasons to work with a variety of really talented designers and illustrators.

  • Mitja Miklavčič and Teja Smrekar helped Jesse finish Aglet Mono and made it a much more interesting typeface in the process.

  • Vanna Vu made trippy images to promote the Cedar release.

  • Kevin McCoy from Work/Play designed a limited edition zine for the promotion of Ballast.

  • Maddy Angstrich punched up the promotional images for our full library.

  • Victoria Rushton baked our typefaces into beautiful cookies (image up top) for our latest Instagram takeover.

  • Previous takeovers by Natalia Oledzka, Stephon White, Beatriz Lozano, and Shannon Levin showed off our typefaces in ways we would have never come up with.

  • Kelli Anderson created a mind-bending animation to promote Aglet Mono—and a Riso print you can order for cheap at goods.xyztype.com.

We zoomed with you all

We were happy to sponsor both Typographics and the TypeWknd online conferences. Ben gave the closing lecture for the TMX conference and explored Twitch streaming of font engineering.

We opened the floodgates

Lastly —because 2020— we decided to make make our fonts more widely available. Of course we’d love for you to continue buying directly from us, but if it removes any barriers, you can now license our fonts from any of these distributors:

  • MyFonts/Monotype

  • Fontspring

  • YouWorkForThem

  • Type Network

  • Fontstand

  • Adobe Fonts

Here’s to a better 2021 for everyone,
—Ben & Jesse
